Nowadays, some buildings such as offices and schools have open-space design instead of separate rooms. Why is it so? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

When we look at modern buildings they appear to be very similar, some would go so far as to say without character with long straight walls with identical square windows.  Inside the buildings the spaces are large and spacious, unlike the buildings in history which have a large variety of shapes and sizes and are full of character. I believe these new buildings reflect modern society which is constantly and rapidly changing and the needs of commercial and educational buildings need to be flexible to accommodate these changes.

The old buildings housing offices and schools were full of character on the outside but in my experience the insides are often a muddle of corridors and rooms which are not always suitable for the current use.  For example, a former office block could have been designed to house a small company but as that company grew and technology evolved the interior spaces had to be divided into a greater number of smaller offices, then as the company changed with market developments the smaller offices were often not always suitable and the business owners found that they were not making good use of the space available.

By designing new buildings with large open spaces, the occupying businesses can use simple partitions to divide office space to manage different departments without having to build or demolish walls and doors. Similarly, schools experience varying class size depending on fluctuating birth rates and population migrations.  By designing classrooms which can be simply divided with a sliding partition wall, classrooms can make better use of the total floor space and when the numbers of pupils increase or decrease the open space can be divided or amalgamated accordingly.

Therefore, I think it is a positive development for buildings such as offices and schools to have open-space designs instead of separate rooms as they are more adaptable to the changing needs of modern society. (316 words)
