IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 - Income disparity

 

In some countries, a few people earn extremely high salaries. Some people think that this is good for a country, while others believe that the government should control salaries and limit the amount people can earn. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

 

The modern world is largely a capitalist society where there is a large financial gap between rich and poor. People in high positions can sometimes earn hundreds of times more than people of lower ranks are compensated in the same company. This income disparity causes a rift between higher earners and their lower earning counterparts. Some people think that having this gap is beneficial for making progress, while others believe that the gap should be reduced by political measures.

 

In modern society, money is the most valued commodity which allows individuals to possess anything. Capitalism motivates people to work harder in order to possess more belongings in their lives. Acquiring high income and having a comfortable life encourages people to study and work harder, therefore it can work favorably when it comes to boosting the national economy. Also, many people believe that people should receive fair compensation for their work, therefore, intelligent individuals who make important decisions should earn more. Many also believe in a merit-based system in which those with innovative approaches to dynamic problems are rewarded for their efforts.

 

However, having a large income gap can cause lots of problems. For example, such a large disparity angers the blue-collar workers and provokes them to protest against the capitalists. Working class can be made to feel neglected and isolated. They might perceive themselves as second class citizens. Sometimes, the large income gap angers civilians and can lead to protests. Furthermore, strikes and boycotts may cause harmful effects for both individuals and governments. 

 

Having the financial gap between rich and poor has its benefits and harms as aforementioned. However, government intervention is required in order to reduce societal problems for making a healthier society. The financial gap between rich and poor may have its merits, as it could lead to innovation as aforementioned. However, the increasing disparity is in desperate need of government intervention, which must act swiftly to tackle societal issues and creating a healthier society. (327 words)
