Writing Task 2/Economic Success

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 - Large Businesses

In the past, most people worked for small businesses, while more people now work for large businesses. What are the advantages and disadvantages of working for large businesses?

Most people worked for small or privately owned businesses in the past, but more people work for large corporations nowadays. In many countries, working for large corporations like Samsung and Apple is considered to be the ultimate career goal because of the high salary, benefits, and social recognition. Working for large corporations might not offer a worker all the necessary experience and resources, but it is still far better than working for small businesses considering many aspects.

Working for large corporations has the following three advantages. First, large corporations offer high salaries and benefits to their employees. The workers of large corporations tend to receive 2 to 3 times higher salary than their counterparts. Also, the employees may receive various allowances for their hobbies, healthcare, education and family. Second, large corporations offer job stability because they have more resources and established organizational structure, which allows them to deal with economic crises better than their counterparts. Finally, large corporations offer their personnel with more job training and education opportunities.

On the other hand, working for large corporations has three negative points as follows. First, large corporations do not offer their employees the opportunities to work on a variety of tasks. Many corporate workers repeat the same work for many years, while their counterparts experience different tasks. Second, employees cannot make suggestions to bring changes to their business processes. The suggestions of employees are most likely not to be reflected in the business due to slow bureaucratic processes. Finally, it is difficult to make deeper connections with your coworkers because a large number of people work in the organization.

Working in conglomerates poses different pros and cons, as mentioned previously. Large corporate workers enjoy competitive salary and other financial benefits, but they do not have enough autonomy for their work. Therefore, one should consider the benefits and the harms when finding future work opportunities. (312 words)
