Many people say that the only way to guarantee a good job is to complete a course of university education. Others claim that it is better to start work after school and gain experience in the world of work. How far do you agree or disagree with the above views?
In today’s world there is no guarantee of a good job but certainly completing a university course helps, as does working hard and gaining experience. However, if an employer had to choose between two equally suitable candidates for a job, they may favour the university graduate. The university graduate has a proven record of self discipline, dedication and thirst for knowledge which could be considered desired qualities for a future employee.
Some employers are more impressed by experience, they want a new recruit to “hit the ground running” and would opt for someone who understands the problems and demands of their business from experience. A potential recruit who has worked their way up from the bottom is more likely to have a thorough knowledge of what makes a successful business from the minute details to the negotiating skills of management. They also have the advantage of having proved themselves hard workers and will have references to reinforce their application.
The university graduate is unlikely to have references from former employers or rounded experience in related fields. However, university graduates may have made good use of their spare time and engaged in activities which have broadened their horizons and given them a variety of experiences, which they can draw on as evidence of their life skills. High importance is given to team work, meeting deadlines and working under pressure, and someone who can demonstrate experience of these skills is more likely to be a desirable candidate.
In conclusion, I would agree that having a university degree is an asset which is highly valued by potential employers and although it does not guarantee a good job it could be the deciding point when choosing between candidates. (284 words)
