Writing Task 2/School Education

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 - Child Education 2

Children nowadays spend a great deal of time watching television. However, television cannot replace the book as a learning tool, which is why children are less well‐educated today. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

I do not completely agree with the statement that children nowadays are less well-educated due to the amount of time they spend watching television instead of learning from books.  It could be argued that watching television is too passive and does not engage the brain as actively as a book does.  However, this depends on the quality of the television that they are watching but I am assuming that the statement is referring to educational programmes which can be a valuable learning aid.

Some children are adept at processing information which they hear or read while other children respond better to visual information.  A combination of book learning and visual aids are useful tools for a teacher to complement the classroom experience.  Often a visual memory can help prompt recall of the subject matter and watching a visual demonstration can help children understand concepts that they may not have grasped from the written word.  Many educational television programmes are made specifically for different age groups and contain material that supplements the books which accompany the schools syllabus.

If children are less well-educated today, there are a variety of possible reasons.  Some children suffer from dyslexia and have problems reading, others are disruptive and have no respect for schools, teachers and fellow students resulting in teaching staff having to waste precious lesson time in discipling bad behaviour.   Also many children do not get enough sleep or eat too much junk food and this affects their mental as well as their physical well-being.  Today's teachers face many obstacles in the classroom.

In conclusion, I agree that it is detrimental for children to sit passively in front of a television for long periods but I think teachers can use educational television programs to complement classroom lessons and incorporate question and answer sessions to assess how well the class has understood the content.  Therefore, if television programmes are well made and used as an education tool alongside books they can make a contribution towards children being well educated.
