Writing Task 2/School Education

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 - University Education

Completing university education is thought by some to be the best way to get a good job. On the other hand, other people think that getting experience and developing soft skills is more important. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Many people believe that graduating from a university is the optimal way to be hired by industry-leading companies, while others believe that developing vocational skills by attending short courses and accumulating work experience can guarantee individuals a better chance of landing their dream job. Personally, I do not believe that attending a university will absolutely guarantee students superior job prospects.

Universities afford students an opportunity to be exposed to higher education. Universities are the center of academia, where individuals can deepen their knowledge and develop academic interests. However, graduating from a university no longer guarantees students employment because the job market is saturated due to the increasingly large number of people who attain college degrees every year. Therefore, the value of acquiring a college degree has been in steady decline in recent years.

More and more corporations are looking for individuals with previous job experience, so that companies can save time and energy on new employee training. People with job experience have a greater chance of being hired than their counterparts. In recent years, many institutions have come to realize that having a college degree does not necessarily mean that the employee will perform better at work. For this reason, they no longer favor college graduates in the hiring process.

Graduating from a university is now considered by many people to be a formula for career success. However, a college education is only necessary for those who want to pursue higher education to deepen their knowledge, as noted above. Acquiring job experience and technical skills is a better option than pursuing a university degree with respect to employment potential.  (269 words)
