Writing Task 2/Ideal Society

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 - Ideal Society

Throughout history, people have dreamed of living in a perfect society, but they have not agreed on what an ideal society would be like. What do you think is the most important element of a perfect society in the modern world? How can people work towards achieving an ideal society?

To live in Utopia is an impossible dream.  If I questioned 1,000 people I would probably receive 1,000 answers because the human population is too diverse to agree on one idea.  My first thought was peace, followed by health, prosperity and longevity but I think the most important element is respect. I would like to see individuals and nations respect each other, I would like to see the populations of the world showing respect for the environment.

Human beings are diverse, they are competitive, inquisitive and inventive. This is what has enabled the modern world to develop.  When I imagine an ideal society I imagine friendly communities living in warm houses, I imagine the divisions between rich and poor abolished so there is no more famine, poverty or homelessness. I imagine clean streets, spotless hospitals, schools with an abundance of facilities, efficient public transport and no crime.  However, none of this is sustainable with the fallibility of human nature.

Unfortunately there will always be those who are not satisfied. This lack of satisfaction can be harnessed in a productive way to improve society but those who are lazy, greedy and have no respect for their neighbours or the environment will continue to be destructive.  We will continue to need police, prisons, weapons and even armies.  In an ideal society there would be no drugs, no violence and no wars.  There would be no pollution in the oceans and no danger of extinction to the world’s wildlife.

I think the perfect society will remain an impossible dream because it contradicts the very nature of the society who will live there.  If it were possible to change human nature and somehow enforce everyone to behave with respect and consideration towards each other, buildings, infrastructure and the natural world then that would be a great step to improving life.
