Writing Task 2/Ideal Society

IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 - National Pension

Some people believe that the government should financially support retired people. Others feel that those who have retired should pay to support themselves. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

One of the reasons why Greece went into default was the significant amount of pension spending on retired people. National pension for the older generation used to be regarded as one of the mandatory social care services in many developed nations. However, many citizens are worried if it is sustainable for governments to continue with universal care when the economy is stagnated. The concern is definitely understandable but social care for elderly should remain and be expanded in the future.

Universal social care for the older generation requires large amounts of public funding. The expenses for elderly support are continuously increasing in recent years. The number of elderly just keeps growing each year as life expectancy is extended in many countries. Some people believe that one should be fully responsible for his or her financial situation after retirement and be required to prepare for the retirement stage from an early age. The government should not be the one which is responsible for one’s individual finances as public resources are limited and scarce.

On the other hand, many citizens believe that the government is required to assist older generations in various ways. The government should support the elderly financially such as providing basic healthcare. In this way, the government could actually reduce the potential health care cost in the long term. Also, many citizens think that the government should provide a minimum amount of pensions and public job opportunities that could help older generations maintain their lives with at least basic dignity as a human being. Because senior poverty could be partially blamed on the economic system.

Protecting and providing basic social care to the elderly is an extremely important matter in society. However, the world has to consider sustainable solutions for elderly care problems while considering the economy. A possible solution could be allocating more budget to the social care system by imposing more taxes on conglomerates and rich individuals. (320 words)
